Nick was so stunned he couldn’t even speak as the friends of legend, the two who had roamed with Monkey in the famous book Journey to the West, reunited again. Watching it happen was like being a kid watching real comic book characters come to life. Nick had read the book so many times, studied it over and over. Now he was meeting everyone who had been in it. Stunned was the only way to describe how he felt.
They headed down the mountain, talking about old times, and ended up in a grove of persimmons, where Pigsy picked and devoured as much fruit as he could reach or knock down with his rake.
“When you killed those serpent demons,” the Friar said, “it broke the spell on the mountain where the Masters had imprisoned us.” Monkey nodded. “So Shu also made certain you could not threaten him.”
“It would seem that way,” the Friar said. “Or rescue you.”
“Who is this human with you?” Pigsy asked. “And does he like persimmons?”
Nick declined the persimmon Pigsy offered, much to the pig’s delight. Until that moment, Nick had not realized he had not been introduced to the Friar and Pigsy. He knew them from the legends and stories, but they didn’t know him.
“He is a very important scholar,” Monkey said.
Both Friar and Pigsy looked at Nick.
“He doesn’t look like a scholar,” the Friar said.
“Never fear,” Monkey said, “I am his teacher.”
Pigsy spit out a persimmon and burst into choking laughter. Monkey stared at him.
Finally Pigsy managed to say, “You and who else?”
“You are supposed to be my comrades.” Monkey was clearly angry at Pigsy’s laughter.
“Yes,” Friar said, “that is why we can tell you the truth.”
Nick knew at once it was the wrong thing to say. Monkey picked the cudgel from behind his ear and it grew in his hands.
The Friar kicked his staff up into his hands.
Pigsy picked up his rake. The three heroes of the famous book stood facing each other, weapons ready.
“What do you know anyway?” Monkey said to Pigsy. “You never even achieved Buddha-hood.”
“I could have if I’d only been able to control my appetite, which I will start to do as soon as I finish eating.”
“Gods, gods,” Nick said, stepping toward them. “Settle down. Do you always get along this well?”
Embarrassed, Monkey lowered his weapon. The other two did the same.
“The scholar is right,” Monkey said. “The truth is we must all work together. Kwan Ying has sent me on a very important pilgrimage.”
Friar Sand and Pigsy both took a step toward Monkey at the sound of Kwan’s name.
“Kwan Ying.” Pigsy drooled more at saying the words than he had eating the persimmons. “If we come, will she join us? Maybe even spend a few days?”
“Excuse me.” Nick stepped into the group. “Is everyone down here in love with Kwan Ymg?”
They all turned and stared at him as if he’d just asked if the sky was blue and clouds were white.
Finally Monkey turned to the rest of them. “We are going to rescue the original manuscript of Journey to the West from the Masters.
